Everybody knows that Havaianas flip-flops are the best flip-flops. Not only do they come in great colors and styles, the soft sole offers cushy padding other sandals cannot touch. At any given time, I have at least 4 pair in my closet and I rotate depending on which pair smells the least terrible at any given time. Yes, I know it’s gross, but wearing rubber flip-flops year-round (in the winter I wear them around the house in leu of slippers) inevitably produces a, embedded foot-stench. In the past, I have replaced my stock of Havaianas at the beginning of each summer, but since they run from $18 to $36 a pair, replacing the entire summer flip-flop collection annually can be a pricey undertaking.

To the interwebs! I researched tips for cleaning Havaianas and came up with my own cleaning combination:

  • Soak sandals in a warm water and bleach solution for 30 minutes
  • Rinse, scrubbing with a toothbrush
  • Soak sandals in a warm water and dish soap solution for another 30 minutes
  • Rinse, again scrubbing with a toothbrush
  • Set to dry somewhere sunny

So far, this treatment seems to have given my current four pair (navy blue, brown, white with black straps, and tan with light blue straps) a new(er), less-stinky lease on life. I’ll probably pick up a new pair or two before the summer’s out, but rather than waiting till they’ve gotten gross to clean them, I’ll work this cleaning combination into a monthly—or maybe even weekly—routine.

And before you say anything, yes, I know my flip-fops can kill me. Whatever. Yet another reason to start doing this bleach-y cleaning!
