My husband and I have been slowly renovating our apartment over the last two years to maximize storage and increase floor space. We have less than 500 square feet, but tons of crap to fill it. Probably because Adam just can’t stop collecting records, books, skateboards, drum equipment, etc… And perhaps because I may own a few books myself. And some shoes. Heh.
We’ve found the best solution was to build up: we built floor-to-ceiling bookcases in the living room, and floor-to-ceiling cabinets in the kitchen. We installed shelving along the top of the walls, right under the ceiling. And we put more shelving in every corner and cubby hole we could find. After all, there’s only so much you can do with lighting and mirrors and all that other crap. What you need to do is clear off the floor and organize the clutter.
Of course, rules are meant to be broken. Who cares if your home is crowded if you’re living in a treehouse, mobile home or reclaimed shipping container? That’s awesome. If you find the ideal location, the home will follow eventually. Perhaps a yurt in Alaska?
