I have a dirty little secret: I’ve been visiting a tanning salon. Okay, so hear me out:

What’s better than going on a fabulous tropical vacation in the middle of winter? Nothing. You’ll look forward to it for weeks, shop for a new bathing suit, watch what you eat, wax… And then you’ll get a sunburn your first day in paradise and your plans of lazing on the beach for a week are quickly dashed. Well, I’ve figured out a way around this. (I do the same thing in the late spring in preparation for summer and the first beach trip of the year.)

Now, this might be a little controversial. After all, tanning beds cause cancer and they’re really only for reality show contestants and strippers (not mutually exclusive).  Well, that might be true, but UV rays in moderation and a little bit of skankiness never really hurt anyone, now, did they? Use your head—I’m not suggesting you become a perpetual tanner, just that you go three times, one week apart, to build your base before the big trip. Ask the people that work there for advice on what kind of bed you should use and how long you should do each time. Personally, I don’t burn easily, but the Irish-German beau does, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let him burn the first day of our anniversary trip to Acapulco next month and be banished indoors for the next two days of our five day trip. Fun in the sun is no fun with a sunburn. That’s all I’m sayin’.

Take my advice or leave it, but don’t come crying to me when you’ve run out of indoor activities in Barbados.
