I’ve struggled for a long time to figure out the best way to utilize the non-working fireplaces in my apartment. The fireplaces were a big selling point of the apartment—we loved the idea of having classic Brooklyn details and a MANTLE—but it always seemed a bit of a waste to have that big hole in the wall… Some people fill theirs with books, which can look great, but with the occasional soot falling from the chimney, we didn’t want to risk our books. Also, being a New England girl myself, I like the idea of, well, LOGS. And birch is the prettiest in my humble opinion…
To get this look:
- Fireplace grate, $10-25
- Birch logs, $5-25
- Tealight candles, $4 for 100
- Tealight candle holders, $2
- A friend with a powerful drill and a 1.75″ drill bit (or you can skip the tealights and drill and just go for the logs alone).
Presto! An elegant, gorgeous addition to your living room. Can’t you just feel the warmth?
Oh, and to complete the effect, burn a Firewood candle.
