Ann Cohen: Mostly I don’t make them because mostly I don’t keep them for more than a couple of weeks. The last one I made and stuck to was that I would eat breakfast at home during the week instead of buying it on the way to work. Actually, I think I made that one for 2008, kept it for a few weeks, then kept it for good once I started working from home and the weather got cold so I’m not sure it counts.
So many resolutions I should make for 2010….. but since I rarely keep them, I think I’ll skip it again this year.
Diana Smith: My resolutions are always the same: quit smoking entirely, lose 10 pounds. So far neither have been accomplished. Ha!
Kelly McCaughey: I think throughout the year I make all sorts of resolutions, but somehow the definitive mark of the end of one time and beginning of another makes for a more inspiring time to change. So, come that time of year I feel compelled to call all the things I desire to change “New Year’s Resolutions”, and I feel more inspired to live up to them.
I can specifically remember one year: I was in a relationship that was not working very well, and I had never really ended a serious relationship before. This particular one had gone on far too long with far too many hurtful memories. I think its one of life’s hardest lessons to know how to face very hard situations head-on, and to learn that you will come out of it stronger and happier with a greater ability to determine the things that don’t work for you in your life and how to see past them. I ended this relationship just about a week before Christmas, knowing it would be rough. Presents were bought, plans were made, but in my heart I just knew it was time. So, I stuck to it. I returned gifts; I trailed along with my sister to her Christmas Eve get-together at her in-laws; I spent a quiet Christmas morning with just my mom, and even the afternoon at my boss’ house! It wasn’t the same as spending those special hours with a closest loved one, and at times it was hard, but I was with the people who at the time mattered to me most for all the right reasons. I also feel like finding the conviction to stick to the changes you make in your life also brings reward. For just a small time later, I met someone who had all the good qualities I deserved. I was able to see those qualities with far more clarity once I confronted the thing in my life that needed to end. I will always feel rewarded for going through that rough holiday season in order to regain my own perspective.
This year my resolution is to train at Muay Thai as hard as I can. I try to work out as much as I can but I would really like to experience full-on training, and hopefully by the end of the year have my first fight. I think it would be something to at least say once in my life I got in a ring and fought. Id also like to have that buff fighter body!!!
Vanessa Boer: I don’t normally make specific resolutions, they’re more like vague hopes for a good year and maybe some progress towards adulthood thrown in. That said, I am actually attempting to make a resolution this year, which is to really push my illustration career along. I am in that transitional place and just need a big shove to the next level. I am going to work on structuring my time better, setting and meeting self-appointed deadlines and drawing as much as humanly possible. I also hope to take better advantage of my gym membership and not just send them a monthly allowance.
Cody McBurnett: Last year I resolved to play and/or cuddle with each of my cats for at least 15 minutes each day. This was kind of a bullshit resolution, since it’s something I should have be doing anyway, but it’s stuck and I know all of us are happier because of it. I also resolved to start going to the doctor regularly and in the space of one week had a general check-up, my gyno exam, my skin checked by a dermatologist, my bum knee checked out by an orthopedist, and my teeth cleaned. I did not go to the eye doctor, but plan to add that one in this year. Although it wasn’t a New Year’s resolution per se, by mid-2009, I had resolved to make my vegan diet even healthier by cutting back on coffee, white flour, sugar, corn syrup, artificial flavors, hydrogenated oils, and all the rest of the bad stuff I was ingesting, which has been a bit difficult, but the pay-off’s been in how good I feel. But you know what feels even better? Getting out of debt and starting to save for real, which was another 2009 resolution accomplished.
2010 is a big year: the beau and I celebrate 10 years together, I turn 30, and we are taking a huge three-week once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Mediterranean. I am resolving to continue working towards the elusive home down-payment (do you think I can get half way there in 2010?), study a language (either go back to Spanish or try out Italian), continue to build my business so that projects I love out-weigh projects I need, learn to play something on my guitar, spend more time in high-heels, read more books, try really hard to be more patient, and work on bringing even more of the best tips, tricks, and saucy commentary to OMFGstyle.com! It’s a lot, but hey, I have a whole year!
