Even if you’re not the biggest dancer, you want freedom to move when you’re at a show. In addition to keeping your hands free, the cross-body bag stays on you, so even if you’re at a sit-down show, your bag’s safely on you even if you stand to clap.

The truth is, you don’t need much for a night out:

  • Wallet (with ID, credit and insurance cards, cash, and Metrocard or other public transport ticket (don’t drink and drive, kids))
  • Hair sticks (or elastic–something to pull your hair back if things get sweaty)
  • Pen (autograph? phone number?)
  • Business Cards (these should always be on you; you do never know who you’ll run into)
  • Lipsticks (to touch up betwen sets (or drinks))
  • Gum (you’re really close to everyone and chances are it’s late in the day… be nice)
  • Keys
  • Cell Phone (the cameras are good enough that you only need to bring one piece of electronic equiptment with you)
  • TICKETS!
  • The Bag Itself (mine’s vintage YSL, about 8″ square, $40 on eBay a couple of years ago–make sure it closes securely)

Oh, and don’t wear good shoes–there is beer and other unidentified sticky stuff all over the ground and someone will inevitably step on your foot.

By the way, this article was inspired by my concert outing last night: The Raveonettes at Webster Hall. Not my favorite venue, but definitely one if my fave bands (think The Ronettes and the Beach Boys meet The Jesus and Mary Chain and… Blondie?). Check them out:
